Why We Started This Site:
As trained scientists, we were dismayed by the overwhelming scientific evidence that global warming is caused by human activities - and by the threat that global warming poses to our planet's future. Having, between the two of us, worked at a number of technology companies and consulting firms, we felt a technology and economics based solution was the best one to pursue in order to intervene in global warming.
While researching carbon credits/offsets for our own personal use, we realized there wasn't a single place where the average person could go to learn more about global warming, climate change, and how to address their own personal contribution to these issues.
It was hard to wade through all the different sites and organizations claiming to offer carbon offsets as well as to understand the difference between carbon offsets and RECs. This was further confused by information regarding countries participating in the Kyoto Accords versus those that were not, and how this impacted selection of a carbon offset provider.
Since we were doing so much research, we thought it would be great to set up a site where users could take advantage of what we had learned, as well as contribute their own knowledge in turn. In addition, we wanted to make it really easy for people to be able to act on their good intentions directly and buy carbon offsets from our site. Hence GreenBetween was born!
How We Make Money
We currently don't make any money from this site and are doing this to help a worthy cause. In the future, we may run advertisement on this site in order to help pay for web hosting and other costs. Or, alternatively, we may charge a small service fee for each carbon offset transaction we help people perform (if we do start charging for this service, we will be explicit about it and break it out as a line item in the charge to our users when they buy an offset).
Who we fund:
We are currently funding projects selected from top carbon offset providers. To learn more about the projects we fund and the criteria we use to select projects, please visit our Projects We Fund page.
